A question which comes forth over and over is about surrender in life.
Shall I surrender?
To whom?
How?
May I in all humility answer this question, which every seeker asks.
What is surrender? Is it, not doing anything?
Surrender in the spiritual sense is not about not doing or being inert. The greatest prophets have never been men or women of inaction. Mother Teresa always spoke about surrender, yet she worked tirelessly. The Gurus of Sikhism, Jesus, Lord Krishna; every one of them worked more than any ordinary human.
The nuance of surrender is the non attachment to the result.
I work very hard in my business. Unfortunately, the result is not to my liking. Surrender implies that I do not despair. In faith and trust, I get up and develop the ability to see the open and closed doors of life. I work again and again, leaving the end result to the higher power, the Omnipotence within.
We do not surrender to a person or to a deity. Rather to the divinity inside us. For that is Omniscience.
The second equally profound dimension of surrender is Bhakti. The greatest, deepest prayer of oneness.
With love in my heart, I let go. In deep oneness. Not doing. allowing the life force inside to awaken and to take me into the fourth state of consciousness. Into a deep meditation from within.
I end with a poem from the 13th century sufi poet Rumi
“It is only a tiny rosebud, a flower of God’s design
But I cannot unfold the petals with these clumsy hands of mine
The secret of unfolding flowers is not known to such as I
God opens these flowers so sweetly- when in my hands they fade and die
If I cannot unfold a rosebud- this flower of God’s design
then how can I have wisdom to unfold this life of mine?
……
The pathway that lies before me- only my heavenly Father knows
I’ll trust him to unfold the moments, just as he unfolds the Rose”
Rumi
May the Omniscience awaken in all those who read.

Ah…how beautifully you have explained the process of surrendering to the infinite power Parneet. I am trying to tread on that path yet many a time I falter, but the journey continues….

Thank you Radhika. The path is tricky and sometimes very demanding. But it is with friends like you that one feels inspired. I’m sure you do not falter. You’re just a perfectionist and possess a deep sense of righteousness. The difficulty of being good.π
Thank you for such warm words.

Excellent post. Rumi poem is stunning. What a great reminder that surrender is not being attached to the result but still doing what our divine natures call us to do.

Great post. I love that Rumi poem. I’d not read that one before. For me, surrender is a moment to moment process, continuing to let go and trust Source and the process.

I had read Rumi’s poem before but had not drawn the fine and subtle connection with surrender that you brought out by your preamble. π
Likewise, I pray in surrender, but the beauty of Rumi’s last four lines leaves a powerful and beautiful imagery to my prayers. …f I cannot unfold a rosebud- this flower of Godβs design, then how can I have wisdom to unfold this life of mine? …The pathway that lies before me- only my heavenly Father knows Iβll trust him to unfold the moments, just as he unfolds the Roseβ π
Thank you.

Some writings are just divinely inspired as is Rumi’s poem. However, divinity also lies in understanding it as you have. I am humbled by your words and your profound appreciation of its meaning.
Warm wishes
